HISTORY

Shaper Studios & Vans are gearing up for the 5th Annual Shaper Festival of Surfing on Saturday, May 12, 2018. The world's first surf contest where every competitor is riding their own handmade surfboard. The first of these historic events took place in 2014 in La Jolla, California.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2014 - La JOLLA, CA

The original idea was quite simple. We thought it might be fun to meet up at the beach and try each other's handmade surfboards. The conversation quickly elevated to, "what if we made it a little more interesting by running a surf contest." The Self Shape Surf Contest was born.

Year one we 72 competitors and 4 divisions (ride anything) and 60 competitors. Our first champions where John Wesley (Men's Open), Eric Hoaglund (Men's Longboard), Cole Houshmand (Juniors), Kelly Sloan (Women's Open). The contest artwork was created by Taylor Dunfee.

MAY 02, 2015 - ENCINITAS, CA

In year two, the Selfie packed up and moved 15 miles up the coast to Seaside Reef in Encinitas. The location gave us a consistent reef break for alternative surfing and classic longboarding alike, improved accessibility for surfers from Orange County, and greater visibility off the scenic Hwy 101.
